Rtn Harun-Ar-Rashid was born in Dhaka as a descendant/offspring of Janab Karim Box who migrated from Iran in early 1700. His forefathers had a glorious past and contributed a lot in the development of old Dhaka City through active participation in the local government bodies as Word Commissioners and ‘Local Sardars’. Few of the notable works to which his forefathers were closely associated are: Dhaka Water Works Project; Gate of “Haji Ballu” in Lalbagh; “Barduari Kachari Ghar” at Posta; and establishment of “Jamiya Qurania Arabia Madrasa” at Lalbagh and Rahmatganj Club in 1933. Rtn Harun-Ar-Rashid is the fifth generation of Janab Karim Box.
Rtn Harun-Ar-Rashid graduated from Dhaka University in 1970. He was a Central Committee Member of East Pakistan Students Union (EPSU). He was a convener of “Students’ 11-point Sangram Parishad” for old Dhaka Town. He participated actively in the War of Liberation in 1971.
He followed the footprints of his forefathers and engaged himself in social work in his locality. He got elected as Word Commissioner/Councilor of Word No. 16 from 1977 to 1981 as an independent candidate of Dhaka ‘Pourshava’ which was later upgraded to Dhaka Municipal Corporation (DMC). He was also elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Third Parliament of Bangladesh in 1986.
Rtn Harun-Ar-Rashid joined “Apex Weaving and Finishing Mills” in 1978. Since then he is looking after the business in different capacities and became its Managing Director in 1991.
Rtn Harun-Ar-Rashid joined Rotary in September 2009 and is the President Nominee for 2025-26. He is very much active in club affairs and comes forward voluntarily to take part in club projects. He is a silent social worker, a member of “Bangladesh Peace Council” and Vice President of “Bangladesh China Maitry Samity (Bangladesh China Friendship Association”).
